From the age of Akbar in the later 16th century, artillery became increasingly important in Mughul armies. Most early guns were large and moved by teams of oxen; once positioned, they remained static throuoghout the battle, being protected by infantry, while Mughul cavalry and elephants moved around the battlefield in attacks.
